The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) has signed a General Cooperation Agreement with the Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC Taiwan) to support programs for young entrepreneurs in the Americas and the Caribbean.  The ceremony, held March 17th 2003 at the historic Main Building of the Organization of American States in Washington, DC, included representatives of OAS Member States, the ROC Taiwan, US Congressional representatives, and other international organizations.

The Young Americas Business Trust, will use the financial contribution from ROC Taiwan during 2003 to expand its Young Entrepreneur Leadership Network, linking young people in business in the Americas and internationally through trade, training, and technology initiatives.

The agreement between the YABT and the Republic of China on Taiwan, through Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), also provides for technical cooperation, with experts from the ROC Taiwan to participate in YABT’s “Business Labs” entrepreneur education and training programs.  This year Taiwan experts in technology, small business, and skills training are expected to collaborate in conferences, workshops, project development, and related activities requested by YABT and interested Member States.

Representative C. J. Chen of the ROC Taiwan in the United States said: "In signing the cooperation agreement, my country pledges to continue to share its expertise and knowledge with our many friends in the Western Hemisphere.”  He noted that fourteen countries in the region recognize the ROC Taiwan, the largest number of any area of the world.  He added, “The Republic of China on Taiwan has always had a special relationship with the Americas and the Caribbean and this contribution today continues   that spirit of friendship and collaboration.”

Accepting the contribution on behalf of YABT as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, Ambassador Denis Antoine, Permanent Representative of Grenada to the OAS said, “The Republic of China on Taiwan has made a significant contribution to the future of business in the Americas and the Caribbean through its friendship and support of the Young Americas Business Trust.  Its continuing cooperation with its friends and allies across the Hemisphere always bring benefits that build democracy, encourage economic growth, and strengthen social development.”  Ambassador Walter Niehaus of Costa Rica, also YABT Vice Chair, praised the YABT / ROC Taiwan cooperation that will provide business and technological benefits to young people in many countries of the Americas.
