Participation in the ICDF Workshop: Microfinance
a report by Daniel Messeder
During the period of 29th of May to June 6th of the year 2004, I represented the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) at the ICDF’s Workshop on Microfinance in Taipei, Taiwan. Being a Brazilian, I also had the great opportunity to represent my country, transmitting important information to all of the participants from many parts of the globe about microfinance in one of the largest economies of the developing countries in Latin America.
At the workshop, each participant had the duty to prepare a country report with all of the detail’s of their respective nation, regarding microfinance. Here in Brazil, the microfinance sector is largely developed. Most of the Brazilian firms are small and micro and there are many institutions that support the microfinance sector. This made possible an exceptional exchange of experiences between the participants, since Brazil has many innovated programs in the micro-credit, incubators and risk-capital fields, all of which are instruments that modify and sustain the microfinance segment.
Taiwan’s initiative to congregate such a diverse and selective group of individuals only brought positive results. The networking between the countries representatives, the business opportunities that appeared and also the exchange of thoughts and cultures made this workshop an encouraging and positive learning experience for all.
The Young Americas Business Trust is present in all of the Americas and Caribbean. There are many similar objectives between ICDF and YABT, mostly all regarding economic growth and the sustainable development of the countries in need. Workshops like this one can make possible the interaction between YABT’s representatives and delegates from the participating countries. This will guarantee the strengthening of the relationship between ICDF and YABT, generating even more growth opportunities for the developing nations throughout the world.
